In order to effectively learn and then teach the art of Boxercise, firstly a recognised exercise professional qualification is needed. Such a qualification will always be a prerequisite before embarking on a journey to become a Boxercise instructor. The following article will explore what type of qualification you may wish to pursue and will also highlight the importance of choosing a CIMSPA endorsed qualification.

What Qualification Do I Need?

The type of fitness qualification you need really depends on what sort of fitness activity you plan on teaching. For example, if you wish to work within a gym, then level 2 Gym Instructing qualification would be ideal, however if you are looking to take group sessions then you may consider a level 2 in Group Based Training. It may be that you wish to do both in which case obtaining both a Gym Instructing and a Group Exercise qualification may be a good option.

If your goal is to work one-to-one with a client, then you will need to study a Level 3 Personal Trainer course. Please note the prerequisite to this is Level 2 Gym Instructing – though many providers will offer L2 Gym Instructing & Level 3 Personal Training as one big package.

What Content Will An Exercise Instructor Course Cover?

The contents of your chosen qualification will depend on which route you take. For example, a Gym Instructing qualification will explore gym-based concepts such as health & safety in the gym and designing /delivering gym sessions with gym equipment. In contrast a Group Training qualification will explore topics from a studio perspective.

If you go on to study a Level 3 Personal Training qualification (remember Level 2 Gym is the pre-requisite) then there will be more complex modules covered such as nutrition and business skills.

How Do I Know The Qualification I Choose Is Recognised?

When choosing an exercise qualification it is very important to choose a course that is going to be properly recognised and accredited. The main thing that you need to look for is CIMSPA endorsement. You should always look for a CIMSPA endorsed Education Provider to ensure that you are going to be taught by a provider who adheres to high levels of quality and standards in the sector. Once you find a provider it is recommended that you search the CIMSPA Online Directory to make sure anyone you consider is properly endorsed by CIMSPA.

Who Will Issue My Certificate?

Training providers deliver qualifications, they do not award them. For this reason a training provider will partner with an awarding body. It is very important that you ensure any qualification that you study is awarded by an Ofqual regulated awarding body such as Active IQ or YMCA Awards. This is particularly important as no matter who you study with, your actual qualification (if you want it to be recognised!) needs to come from an Ofqual and CIMSPA recognised awarding body. Any certificates that are not issued by an Ofqual regulated awarding body will simply not be recognised in the industry.

Who Are The Best Course Providers?

Whilst there is no league table as such, CIMSPA have recently introduced a quality rating system (similar to how Ofsted inspect and award ratings for schools). CIMSPA now award their endorsed Education Providers a rating of emerging (one star), enabling (two star) or enhancing (three star). Always check as to what rating any provider that you are considering has achieved as this is a useful quality indicator.

Summary

Above all if you would like to become a Boxercise instructor is it first absolutely imperative that you qualify as a CIMSPA recognised exercise professional. The actual qualification route you take will depend on your goals however you should always look to study a CIMSPA endorsed qualification via a CIMSPA endorsed Education Provider
